About Dr Nick Vrodos
Dr Nick Vrodos is a Consultant Neurosurgeon and Head of Neurosurgery at Flinders Medical Centre and has private practices at Memorial Medical Centre and Flinders Private Hospital.
Nick is a recognised leader in both cranial and spinal surgeries. He specialises in complex cranial tumours, vascular and skull base tumours with a focus on endoscopic skull base surgery. His expertise extends to spine surgery in degenerative diseases and tumour cases.
A graduate of The University of Adelaide, he specialised in Neurosurgery in Melbourne, with further training at international centres Barrow Neurological Institute, Phoenix, Arizona and Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami.
On returning to Adelaide, he was a Consultant Neurosurgeon and Spine Surgeon at both the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre.
Over two decades, Nick has fostered close collaborations with senior ENT surgeons managing complex pituitary tumours and acoustic tumours leading to better patient outcomes.
For 20 years Nick provided Neurosurgical services to Darwin and the Northern Territory and was integral to establishing a permanent unit at the Royal Darwin Hospital.
Nick is passionate about teaching the next generation of medical specialists. He is a Senior Lecturer of Clinical Neurosurgery at Flinders University.
His commitment to building a workplace that provides a culture of excellence and a supportive learning environment was recognised in 2023, with the Department of Neurosurgery at Flinders being awarded a Team Culture Award for the fostering of doctors in training.
He actively contributes to training neurosurgeons, emphasising transparency, quality control, and regular audit of morbidity and mortality. As such the postgraduate surgical training at Flinders Medical Centre is a highly sought-after Neurosurgical Training Centre.
Passionate about advancing Neurosurgery in South Australia and Australia, Nick has served as an Australasian Neurosurgical Fellowship Examiner for 9 years and is currently on the Neurosurgical Training Board, and a Director of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia.
Nick supports research, which has seen him serve on the Board of the Neurosurgical Research Foundation for over 20 years and he is currently President. The NRF has been successful in raising millions of dollars over these years to fund vital research to improve outcomes for patients with neurosurgical diseases.
Maintaining international links with neurosurgeons worldwide, Nick emphasises the importance of being aware of global standards while prioritising the advancement of local techniques, standards and training environments.
Nick remains dedicated to delivering neurosurgical services in both public and private sectors.
